Good morning to all & happy Monday!! We are headed into the month of April this week, can you all believe it? This is nuts! 2014 is flying by!! Whew!
Today I wanted to write the blog about water. This is a constant question that I get when personal training or when walking around with a liter bottle everywhere I go!! So..."how much water shoul I drink & why?" Well....here's a little bit of that answer. I go into lots of detail in my eBook on nutrition, but here is some information on the benefit & need for water in your system!! So grab a glass & read away! :)
The big question is how much??
Well the answer isn't easy or simple. The actual amount of water needed daily varies by person & amount of activity. There has always been a general suggestion of eight glasses a day as a realistic goal. If you are working out/training you should consume 12-15 glasses per day minimum. If your urine appears dark yellow, water intake needs to be increased. The color of urine should typically be a pale yellow.
What are the benefits of water?
First and foremost water regulates our body temperature and provides the means for nutrients to travel to your organs and tissues. Water also aids in the transport of oxygen in your body. Without enough water, you're preventing your body to function at it's best! Who wants that?
1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue – drinking water helps you think, focus, and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted.
2. Keeps you regular- water helps in digestion and prevents constipation.
3. Helps with headaches– Helps relieve and prevent headaches that are usually brought on by dehydration.
4. Muscle growth-water carries oxygen to the cells of your body, including those of your muscles. Drinking plenty of water enables your muscles to work harder and longer before they feel tired, and this can help you build muscle.
5. Weight loss-The more water you drink, the fuller you feel, & the less calories you are likely to consume in one sitting. Water removes by-products of fat & raises your metabolism. Water is also calorie free!
6. Immune System boost– Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu, heart attacks, colds, & allergies. With your body functioning correctly, your immune system can remain strong & active.
7. Improves Skin- lots of water moisturizes your skin, keeps it fresh, glowing, and smooth. It’s the best & cheapest anti-aging treatment!
8. Flushes Out Toxins – Gets rid of waste through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones & other bacterial infections.
9. Cost efficient- the best part about water is that it is free!! Even if you decide to purchase a water filter or water bottles, they are still cheaper than a large soda or grande Starbucks latte!
But I hate the taste!
Ok, I feel you!! I used to HATE to drink water, like really hate it! But I just couldn't deny the benefits & vowed to stop with the mochas & the diet sodas. I allow myself about 2 specialty drinks per week, sometimes a diet coke, or a mocha frap. But other than that, it's water!! I consume about 1 gallon of water per day & usually it is infused.
What does this mean? My water isn't usually plain! I add---lemon, lime, cucumber, blueberries, & strawberries. When out at a restaurant "water with lemon", in my water bottle, small fruits & lemon. This helps keep me drinking. It's not plain & boring!
I do drink plain, bottled water when working out.
Water is so important to your everyday functioning. Your body is made up of over 60% water, so drink up, your health is at stake!!
