Good
morning everyone & happy Monday to you all. This week’s blog is a travel
one & I am excited to share our 2-part trip to Kaunas, Lithuania. Kaunas is
Lithuania's second largest city with approximately 350,000 people. Compared to Houston,
that’s a pretty small town, but for here it’s a large place with lots to do.
The first trip to Kaunas was last weekend to watch Zo’s team play another
Lithuanian team. Zo had an AMAZING game & the team did great, winning in
overtime!! Whew, those games take all my energy.
A fellow wife, Bria & I went down early to Kaunas to explore & grab a bite to eat before the game. To give you an idea of where we were, here is the map. We live in Penevesys, and we drove to Kaunas.
We
made a stop at the center square & just walked around. The prettiest stop
we made was at the Kaunas Sobor, which is in the center of a small square. This imposing Russian Orthodox Church
with its shining dome was built for officers of the military fortress. After
independence of Lithuania (1918) the Russian military departed and the church
became Roman Catholic. It still remains the church of the army.
After
walking around we decided to stop into Charlie Pizza, which is a chain pizza
place in Lithuania. We both enjoyed a soup & salad. (Little Logan had some
French fries). Bria & I are both lovers of coffee & decided to find a
cute little coffee shop to stop into. We found a place called Green Café &
wow!! It didn’t disappoint.
The atmosphere was very relaxing & inviting. The walls were filled with photos from where they import their coffee from, including America, Asia & Africa. They use organic coffee beans, they have more than 20 specialty coffees & a TON of different brewing methods, including
Aeropress,
Chemex, & a cold-brew drip system. I was super impressed & the coffee
was delicious.
After
enjoying our afternoon we headed to the sports arena, which was a small drive
to a town next to Kaunas & it was great to see the boys get a win! It was
the first time Logan had seen Zo play live since April so it was a treat. I was
back in my happy place as the crazy wife who yells at the refs, stands up, and
the son who is constantly screaming “goooooaaaaalllll” (maybe summer soccer was
the wrong sport for Logan to join).
The
first trip to Kaunas was a success!!!
Now,
the second trip was even better!
3
seasons ago we played in Latvia. Our dear friends that were on the
team with us are now playing in Lithuania also (different team). Kaunas is a
close middle city so the Williams family, along with the Grants AND the
Magden’s (Bria, her husband Ben & cousin Caitlin) all decided to meet up
there, eat, and watch Jerai’s game since we had on off day then.
Zo
& Jerai won the championship together in 2014. When you win a championship,
they are pretty much your brothers for life. We still have dear friends in
Latvia (stay tuned for blogs from there too as ill be visiting throughout the
season), and we still stay close to some of his teammates from there. It is
such an accomplishment & we just love Jerai, Jessica, & little Halle.
So we drove into Kaunas & got to hang yesterday which was a treat! We enjoyed eats at Talutti. It's like an American twist on some delicious eats! I enjoyed a cappuccino & a chocolate madness with espresso! Zo enjoyed a big burger & fries. All of their food was well priced & great portion size!!! We loved it!
TALUTTI!!!

Group photo time...
We saw a few more sites along the city & enjoyed watching Jerai play.
Overall it was a fabulous weekend & we are ready to start a fabulous week of a Eurocup game & an away game in my favorite Lithuanian city "the hill of crosses"...look for that post next week :)
