Good morning readers & happy Monday! Today's blog topic comes from the idea of being fit & fat. I have quite a few clients as well as friends & family who struggle with this issue & I wanted to share my thoughts.
***before I continue---this blog is referring to those that are not overweight, but have reached their goal weight & are dealing with becoming more lean & fit. I do not want anyone confused that I am comparing obesity/overweight & being fit. If you are on a weight loss journey, keep up the good work!! This is just for those that are on that "last 10 pounds struggle" or those that are confused as to why they still have extra fat sticking around*** :)
What am I really referring to?
Have you seen someone who looks pretty fit but has a beer belly? Or someone who has really muscular arms but a fatty rear-end or stomach? Someone who has an extra layer of fat over their arms, legs, or rear?
People can go to the gym everyday, take their daily gym selfie so you know they are #workingout #gettingitin #achieving & when you look at their picture they appear pretty fit. Now what if we would see that same #fitlife guru with their shirt off or follow them in a day of food?
You can still workout & lift weights & not be truly fit!! It IS possible & actually pretty common. So let's talk problems & solutions here....
Problem #1: the person is lifting weights & training too much. This type of person thinks that lifting weights 4-5 days per week is going to get them "lean". This isn't particularly true. For the person with the extra layers of fat or a higher BMI needs to stick with 80% cardio & 20% lifting weights per week until they reduce their bodyfat enough to become more fit & lean. Once you hit your target weight & BMI, lifting weights more regularly is perfect.
Problem #2: people think by working out all the time, the pizza, cookies, burgers, & fast food will just melt away. This is ridiculous & that extra layer of fat shows it! You might burn calories & lose fat by lifting weights & working out....but like you've heard before...bad diet=bad body. There is proven correlations between your health & your food consumption. Not only does that bad food stick to your gut & create fat pockets leading to extra layers of skin & cellulite; it also poses risks to your health by raising your cholesterol, raising your BMI, & raising your body fat %. You also are posing risks to your heart & kidneys. So for the guy in the gym with the high BMI & body fat %...you are not just "big boned", "just tall", or "just a big guy". You're struggling with mixing fitness and an unhealthy diet.
Problem #3: you're in denial. When was the last time you plugged in your information and checked your body fat % or BMI? When was the last time you monitored your blood pressure or heart rate? You can't really be fit & fat...You can be fit & have fat, but with proper diet that fat will be minimal & your vitals perfection. If you are struggling with a high BMI or body fat % it's more about your health than the scale. It's important that everyone, no matter how fit you are, monitor your health on a regular basis. Your health is always number one. Working out is great for everyone & more power to you all for getting out there & putting in work. But make sure your work isn't for nothing. Make sure you are consuming healthy foods & keeping your health in check or those weights are going to waste!
This post wasn't to take a stab at those out there trying to get more fit, or like I mentioned earlier for those overweight & trying to lose fat. This is to get you to take a look at your fitness & to recognize that not everyone you see at the gym really is as fit as they might appear. No need to compare yourself to others or envy someone at the gym. Looks can be deceiving but healthy is always perfect!!
Make the goal to lose fat & become more lean. Make the goal to lower that body fat % & BMI & to consume healthy & unprocessed foods.
Put down the burger, put down the bacon, put down the syrup, & the fried chicken. Don't keep that extra layer of fat around...it's not healthy & it's not worth your health.
Have a great week!!
-Morgan
